Palliative Care addresses physical and psychological aspects of end of life, including pain management, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual support, as well as bereavement support. Specialized teams offer exemplary care for patients, as well as support to their families and friends in all steps along the way. The focus is on care, giving support and respect for the person nearing death and maximizing quality of life for the patient and loved ones.
The Palliative Care Unit at Lakeridge Health Whitby provides services for the residents of Durham Region who require hospital-based complex medical care that extends beyond the scope of Long Term Care (LTC) facilities such as nursing homes or rehabilitation centres. At the present time, the unit has six rooms prepared for palliative care. Due to the growing population in the Region of Durham and the aging population, our present goal is to offer nine more rooms upgraded, decorated and furnished, to provide a total of 15 rooms for palliative care. Comfort is a high priority in palliative care. A room that looks and feels like a home can offer a calmness and serenity you cannot get from medication.

A $10,000 sponsorship for a room will help provide comfortable furnishings for both patient and visitors. Imagine warmly decorated rooms with lamps, and a comfortable recliner chair or sofa for a visiting family member to stretch out on and spend the night.
